LORE
In Malaysian folklore, the Penanggal is beautiful female figure, born from dark magic or demonic forces. It detaches its head at night with trailing entrails, preying on pregnant women and children. It perches atop roofs during childbirth, seeking the blood of new mothers and inflicting a wasting disease.
"In some areas of Southeast Asia, the scents of jasmine and ylang-ylang are believed to carry ominous connotations, often associated with impending ill fortune. Despite this, I’ve always been fond of jasmine and other indolic flowers. To me, they represent the balance of light and dark—beauty that exists in harmony with its contrasts. Joy by Jean Patou serves as my benchmark for a jasmine-centric fragrance, and I wanted to explore that through the lens of Southeast Asia. I’ve pushed the ylang-ylang as far as possible within the IFRA allowances, aiming to capture the intense, narcotic air of the humid summer, where these flowers bloom in full force."
